Sport Fighting League: June - Event Preview

By Matt Frazier | Knuckle Junkies

The final show under the Sport Fighting League banner will happen this Friday. After 40 events and 400+ fights, the SFL will be absorbed into Rumble Time Promotions. Under the direction of Jim Jenkins, Rumble Time MMA will continue to put on quality shows at both the Heart of St. Charles and Ameristar Casino.

In Friday's main event at the Heart of St. Charles, Brandon Knight will be taking on CJ Hunter.

There is something that happens to amateur fighters when they've beaten the top guys in their division, their reputation makes it harder and harder to get fights. Such is the case for featherweight Brandon Knight (8-1). With Alex White turning pro in January, Knight has moved to the top of the list for local amateurs. He will put his reputation on the line when he steps into the cage on Friday for a rematch against "The Ground Shark".

In their first fight in January 2011, Hunter got caught in a fight-ending guillotine from the standing position. Hunter now trains at 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu and is much better than his record would indicate. Four of Hunter's five losses have come to top featherweights: Alex White, Travis Draper, and Kirk Huff, in addition to Knight.

Hunter is very slippery on the ground and could give Knight trouble should the fight get there. Knight doesn't like to waste any time and finishes most of his fights in the first round.

In what was originally billed as a tournament to find the best bantamweight, Charles Johnson will take his undefeated record into the cage to face Berger MMA's Richie Fernow. Fernow is on a bit of a hot streak after dispatching a previously undefeated Will Alfaro at Nemesis, and AJ Siscoe at the Fight Me in January. Fernow hasn't fought since February after taking some time away from training to enjoy the birth of his first child. The winner of this bout will get a spot on the July Rumble Time event at Ameristar.

Jason Alicea and Rob Miller will be fighting for the "Fan Favorite" title. This bout was scheduled to happen twice already but had to be rescheduled both times due to injuries. Both guys are tough fighters that fight only because of their love for the sport.

Matt Helm looks to snap his losing streak against Kirk Brown from Vineyard MMA. Helm trains with the best in the area at St. Charles MMA and will be well prepared for the fight on Friday.

Adrian Bohannon will take on Ross Cooper. Cooper is a very tough wrestler and most recently defeated Jeremy Koerper at Fight Me in January. After fulfilling his commitments with the Marine Corps, Bohannon joined the team at Field Warriors in Effingham as has been training alongside Brandon Knight and Ryne Gartner.
